I've often found this perplexing but I assume it's that Irish folks are trying to wash away their terrorism sins by trying to justify today's terror regime against Israelis. Projection is the word that comes to mind.

I've had several Irish people even here in the US bring up their moral superiority for Palestinian support in conversation, which I find deeply amusing. Methinks the lady doth protest too much. :)
