When he wasn’t dodging bullets or Epstein plane manifests, Donald Trump chose a running mate this week. His pick is the Rightwing Millennial Bear Who Needs a Makeover, JD Vance. Vance is the current junior senator from Ohio, and is — like Trump — a master of the rebrand. He grew up in a poor, broken home and left to join the Marines where he served as a PR guy in the Middle East. After discharging, Vance got a Yale law JD, and wrote a bestselling book that “explained” white, working class angst to…people who buy books. Along the way, he made a lot of rich friends in Silicon Valley, became a Senator, and has been a reliable firebrand for the new nationalist right.
In choosing him, Trump taught us that he would rather win this election than worry about being overshadowed by a younger, more eloquent running mate. If HBO’s Veep taught us anything, it was that Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a national treasure. If it taught us a second thing, it showed that the Vice President matters a lot less than people think, and it’s a great place for politicians with chutzpah to see their political careers die. And…
