This is interesting because it mostly validates Peter Thiel’s theory of mind for educating entrepreneurs (that it should happen in startups).
In my personal experience, the other thing (beyond tradeoffs) that I routinely did as a student was get lazy. I’d figure out what the lowest atomic unit of work that I had to do in order to get a desired grade was, and then use my newly freed time for more entrepreneurial endeavors. In this way my average was always an B+/A- and never an A+ because I knew I didn’t need an A+ for my future life as an entrepreneur.
I think Bezos has said that he loves hiring lazy executives because they will always figure out a way to optimize. :)
