What to Expect When You’re Expecting (to be Laid Off)
I tend to catastrophize the future.
In every situation I will consider the worst case scenario, immediately fast forward to it, and begin operating under the assumption that it is inevitable. Being Jewish definitely doesn’t help bend this curve, since the basic history of our people is “We were persecuted, we survived, let’s eat.” I just spend an inordinate amount of time in gear 1 (and who am I kidding, 3).
Perhaps you are like me, without the vaguely Larry David-esque trajectory? If so, I’m guessing this coronavirus crisis is taking a big toll on you.
At this point if you haven’t been laid off yourself, you undoubtedly know someone who has, or is on the brink. If you’re an entrepreneur or leader, perhaps your company is in trouble or you know people whose startups are faltering. Start by acknowledging this is a big psychological cross to bear.
In addition to all the fear and anxiety that the virus is causing around loved ones getting sick, you also have to deal with the potential economic fallout…and the news certainly isn’t upbeat. Dealing with that kind of existential dread can be exhausting, and requires active support.
